Former Sekhukhune United player Mokete 'Shaune' Mogaila pleaded guilty to culpable homicide and related charges on Monday, October 5, 2026, for a fatal 2024 crash. The National Prosecuting Authority welcomed the guilty plea, stating it would allow for accountability without a full trial.
The fatal collision occurred on Andrew Mapheto Drive in Tembisa on 30 October 2024. Mogaila, now 29, admitted to reckless driving, fleeing the scene and failing to render assistance after the crash. His negligent driving caused the death of nine-year-old Gomolemo Mavimbela and seriously injured the child's mother and a 13-year-old neighbour. Drugs and alcohol were found in Mogaila's vehicle following the incident. He later surrendered himself to police.
Mogaila is a former Sekhukhune United footballer. He will return to court for sentencing on November 17, 2026. Victim impact statements are expected before the court determines his penalty, allowing the families to explain the impact of their loss. An earlier proposal involving a light fine was rejected by the victims' families.
The news comes as the current Sekhukhune United squad sits sixth in the Premier Soccer League with 11 points from seven games. The team has scored 8 goals and conceded 6, averaging 114 goal minutes per game. Their recent form shows two wins, two draws, and one loss from their last five matches. The team's next fixture is at home against Marumo Gallants on October 17. Mogaila's sentencing hearing is scheduled for next month.
